:: Registering Your Child for School
Pre-enrollment at Edmonton Public Schools begins each year in early March. Early registration not only helps parents and students plan for the next school year, it gives schools the information they need to make plans based on the number of students they can expect in the fall. Contact a school directly for more information on their pre-registration process.
You are welcome to register at any one of our schools throughout the year. Contact the school of your choice for more information.
For information on choosing a school, Kindergarten, student transportation, programs and more, download a copy of the Edmonton Public Schools Quick Guide.
Choosing your child's school
Every neighbourhood in Edmonton offers designated public schools, even though they may not have a school building in their particular community. Use our Find a School Tool to search for your designated elementary, junior high or high school.
Students choosing to attend their neighbourhood school will have guaranteed access as long as they've registered to attend. Students are also free to attend any other District school, as long as:
- the school provides the right type of programming to meet student needs
- the school has room to accommodate new students
- the student meets entrance requirements, if necessary
Contact the school of your choice for more information.
Getting more information about a school
You can learn more about our schools and the programs they offer by visiting school websites, attending open house events, stopping by the school office or calling to book a school tour. You can also contact our Planning department at 780-429-8427.
Registering your child for school
Step 1: Download our Student Registration form and Collection and Use of Personal Information Declaration
Step 2: Fill out the forms, print and sign in the designated area(s)
Step 3: Bring the completed forms to the school at which you wish to register, along with appropriate documentation required by the school to complete your registration:
- Verification of legal name and age (usually a birth certificate)
- Confirmation of address for the student's parent or legal guardian (driver's license, utility bill)
- In some cases, immigration documents may also be required, such as landed immigrant documentation or a Permanent Residency Card; for more information, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website
If you need additional assistance or have specific questions about completing a Student Registration form, please contact the school at which you are registering.
Kindergarten registration:
Children who are four years of age on or before March 1 may register in Kindergarten for the upcoming school year. Contact the school of your choice to learn more about registration, open house dates and Kindergarten orientation sessions.
When registering for the first time, a parent or guardian will need to present legal proof of their child's name, citizenship and birth date. The following is a list of Vital Statistics documents that are deemed acceptable for this purpose:
- Canadian provincial birth certificate
- Canadian citizenship document
- Canadian adoption certificate
- Canadian marriage certificate
- Canadian passport
- Landed immigrant document or Permanent Residency Card; for more information, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website
For students new to Edmonton Public Schools:
Registration forms may be filled out by a parent/legal guardian or independent student (over the age of 16 and living independently). Signatures on the registration forms are required as this information is entered in the school data system and becomes part of a student's record.
As a parent/legal guardian or independent student, you must provide verification of the student's legal name and age. A student's birth date and legal name can be verified using the following documents:
- Canadian provincial birth certificate
- Canadian citizenship document
- Passport
- Student visa
- Landed immigrant document or Permanent Residency Card; for more information, visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website
