ESL Reception Centres

Program Description

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Reception Centres provide students and families who are new to Canada with information about the public school system and English language assessment. Student assessments and family interviews are held by appointment only, at one of four reception centres: Harry Ainlay, Jasper Place, J. Percy Page and Eastglen schools.

Goals

  • Develop an understanding of English programming options and supports
  • Learn about the school system, school expectations and supports available for newcomer students

Program delivery

  • An appointment with a consultant to assess a student’s English language skills
  • A family interview to gather information about a student’s background and academic history
  • Assistance with choosing a program
  • Support for families and students in their first language

Eligibility

Upon registration at a school, an appointment is made at one of four ESL Reception Centres for students who:

  • Are foreign-born
  • Arrived in Canada after the start of the previous school year 
  • Enrolled in Grades 1 to 12
