ATTENDANCE AREA BOUNDARY OPTIONS

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas about attendance areas for Ivor Dent School. We heard from some of you at our information meetings and from many more of you through our online survey. Please know your feedback helped us make our decisions.

APPROVED ATTENDANCE AREA

The Superintendent has approved the following attendance area for Ivor Dent School:

  • All students currently enrolled at Rundle, Lawton and R. J. Scott schools will be accommodated at Ivor Dent School.
  • The following neighbourhoods are designated to Ivor Dent School for Kindergarten to Grade 9: Beverly Heights East, Beverly Heights West, R.J. Scott and Rundle.
  • The following neighbourhoods are designated to Ivor Dent School for Grades 7-9 only: Abbott, Beacon Heights East and Beacon Heights West.
  • Students living in Abbott and Beacon Heights East and West can attend Ivor Dent School for Grades 7-9 only. This means that siblings in Kindergarten to Grade 6 are not able to attend Ivor Dent School with their older siblings if they weren’t enrolled at Rundle, Lawton or R.J. Scott schools in the 2016-17 school year.
  • Effective for the 2017-18 school year, Canon Ridge, Homesteader and Overlanders neighbourhoods will be designated to John D. Bracco School for Grades 7-9 only.
  • Ivor Dent School will have an open attendance boundary, which means any student may pre-enrol at the school. A random selection process will be used if there is not enough space to accommodate all interested students.
  • Yellow bus service for eligible elementary students will be provided for Beverly Heights East, Beverly Heights West and R.J. Scott neighbourhoods.

For questions about yellow bus service, contact Student Transportation at 780-429-8585.

HOW WE MADE THE DECISION

We chose an attendance area that would allow as many students as possible to attend a school close to home, and we did our best to keep families and communities together. We were careful to make sure the school doesn’t fill up too quickly while communities are still growing. This is a lesson we learned from opening other schools in new areas.

YOUR FEEDBACK

We used feedback we received from our community consultations in 2014 to help build the replacement school. Your ideas and feedback helped build a brand new school that will leave a legacy in your community for years to come. We also appreciate the input you shared about the attendance area options at our meeting and through our online survey last spring.

MANAGING GROWTH

Every student who pre-enrols will get to attend their designated school. Ivor Dent School has an open attendance boundary, which means that, if there’s still room at the school once students from the primary attendance area are accepted, students from outside the attendance area will be chosen by random selection.

The school will carefully manage enrolment to make sure there’s room for new students who move into the school’s primary attendance area, and we hope this will minimize the need to change attendance areas in the future.

For questions about the attendance area decision, contact the Planning department at 780-429-8539.

SCHOOL NAME

The new replacement school in Rundle Heights will be named after Ivor Dent, a former Edmonton politician. The Board of Trustees approved this school name, along with the names of four more new schools at a public meeting on June 23, 2015.
