Cavanagh Proposed K-9 Redesignation

PROPOSED ATTENDANCE AREA REDESIGNATION

Parents, families and community members are invited to attend a meeting to discuss a proposed redesignation for Kindergarten to Grade 9  for the Cavanagh neighbourhood.

The Cavanagh neighbourhood is currently designated to Dr. Lila Fahlman School for Kindergarten to Grade 9. We are considering a redesignation for the area to Roberta MacAdams School for Kindergarten to Grade 6 and D.S. MacKenzie School for Grades 7 to 9, effective for the 2019–20 school year.

Students living in the Cavanagh neighbourhood who currently attend Dr. Lila Fahlman School would still be able to attend. Their siblings would also be able to attend, as long as an older sibling is still going to the school when the younger sibling registers or pre-enrols.

‌REASONS FOR THE PROPOSED CHANGE

Dr. Lila Fahlman School is filling up quickly, and we need to adjust the attendance area now before the school is too full. By adjusting the attendance area now, we can let students from the Cavanagh area who currently attend Dr. Lila Fahlman School stay at the school.

The proposed redesignation would only impact families moving into the Cavanagh area or families in the area who do not have children currently attending Dr. Lila Fahlman School.

CHOOSING TO REMAIN AT YOUR CURRENT SCHOOL

Students from the Cavanagh neighbourhood who currently attend Dr. Lila Fahlman School could stay at the school. Siblings would also be able to attend, as long as an older sibling is currently attending the school at the time of registration or pre-enrolment. However, yellow bus service would no longer be provided because students would not be attending their designated school.

GETTING TO SCHOOL

Yellow bus service would be provided to eligible elementary students in the Cavanagh neighbourhood who attend their designated school. Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) is the preferred transportation method for junior high students; however, if ETS does not meet District standards, eligible junior high students attending their designated school may apply for yellow bus service.

If the proposed redesignation goes ahead, students who choose to stay at Dr. Lila Fahlman School would need to make their own arrangements to get to and from school.

TIMELINES AND NEXT STEPS

If the proposed redesignation is approved, the change would be in effect for the 2019–20 school year. Edmonton Public Schools will make a final decision about the proposed redesignation by the end of January before families choose their school for next year. We will share information with families once a decision is made.
