News Item: Highlights of Achievements from 2014-2015

Edmonton Public Schools shared the highlights of its achievements from the 2014-2015 school year during the November 24, 2015 board meeting, demonstrating the District continues to be a leader in inclusive policies, has higher graduation rates and parents continue to be pleased with the quality of education their children are receiving.

Board Chair Michael Janz said the results review presentation demonstrated the District is truly standing by its vision of “transforming the learners of today into the leaders of tomorrow” by giving students high-quality learning opportunities and engaging students, parents, staff and the community.  

“I am really proud of the work our District is doing to support our students and give them a strong future. Our staff truly cares about each and every student.”  

The annual results review presentation by Supt. Darrel Robertson highlighted the following District results:

  • Continuing to be a leader in inclusion through the establishment of universal washrooms, school-based GSA clubs and inclusive District-wide policies
  • Five-year high school completion rate is up 3.2% over five years, while drop-out rate is lower
  • Hundreds of staff trained in Mental Health First Aid – one of many ways the District is putting students first
  • 700 stronger readers thanks to extra supports provided by the District
  • Helped welcome more than 431 newcomer families
  • Supporting healthy school communities through anti-bullying toolkits and school-based events to encourage healthy interactions between students
  • Development of a Kindergarten edukit for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students that pooled the collective expertise of teachers, elders, knowledge keepers and cultural advisors
  • Launched online pre-enrolment with more than 70% of eligible students registering this way
  • Worked with community partners to deliver The Journey to Reconciliation Youth Leadership Conference with more than 700 youth and adults taking part
  • Continually meeting or exceeding parents’ expectations with 91% of teachers, parents and students saying they are satisfied with the quality of education offered in the District
