Transportation and COVID-19

We are continuing to take steps in the 2021-22 school year to make sure the bus riding experience is a safe one for everyone.

As students, staff and bus drivers become familiar with new processes during the first few weeks of school, families may experience a delay in pick up and drop off. You can check Where’s My Bus? in SchoolZone to track the progress of your child’s yellow bus.

Bus drivers will be provided with a seating plan. Students will be asked to sit in a specific seat when they board the bus.

Many bus routes include students from multiple schools. This means students may be seated with individuals from the same household or with another student from a stop nearby.

Families are encouraged to consider other transportation options if they are not comfortable with their child riding the yellow bus with other children.

Masks are an important way to mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19, especially now as Alberta is still working toward all eligible individuals being fully vaccinated and children under 12 cannot yet be vaccinated.

All students and drivers are required to wear masks for the entire bus ride, as directed by the Government of Alberta.

If your child is unable to wear a mask, you will require a medical exception letter. Learn more about the province’s exceptions for medical conditions

For anyone else boarding the bus, they must wear a mask and pass the COVID-19 Alberta Health daily checklist requirements. This includes:

  • bus drivers
  • parents of Pre-Kindergarten students who are placing their child in an integrated car seat
  • educational assistants accompanying students on the yellow bus

Students riding ETS will need to wear a mask or face covering on public transit. Learn more about wearing masks on public transit or visit ETS for more information.

The bus will be cleaned according to COVID-19 cleaning standards prior to each run, and this cleaning will be recorded by the carrier.

Route schedules have been adjusted to allow time for cleaning when a bus is required to make multiple trips. During the first few weeks of school, Student Transportation will monitor routes to identify where schedule adjustments may be required.
