Alex Janvier (Westlawn) 4-9

Alex Janvier School will open as a Grade 4-9 school in fall 2021. Thank you to everyone who took part in our engagement process.

After consulting with the community for the Westlawn School Project, this community-driven project resulted in two new schools for the Westlawn area:

  • a new K-3 school on the current Afton site (Aleda Patterson School)
  • a new Grade 4-9 school on the current Westlawn site (Alex Janvier School)

The following neighbourhoods are in the attendance area for Alex Janvier School, effective for the 2021-22 school year:

  • Belmead*
  • Summerlea
  • Glenwood
  • Terra Losa
  • La Perle*
  • West Jasper Place
  • Sherwood
  • West Meadowlark Park

*Belmead remains designated to Belmead School and La Perle remains designated to LaPerle School for Grades K-6.

Alex Janvier School is a Level 1 school on the Growth Control Model and will have an open attendance area boundary. Students living outside the attendance area can pre-enrol if there’s space. If demand exceeds available space, students from outside the attendance area will be chosen through random selection.

Yellow bus service is the preferred transportation method for eligible elementary students attending their designated school who live outside the walk boundary.

Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) is the preferred transportation method for junior high students.

The Division tried to make decisions that:

  • allow as many students as possible to attend a school close to home
  • honoured the community’s feedback from our engagement process
  • can allow students outside of the attendance area to enrol if there’s space in planned classes

Students can attend their designated school if they register (new students) or pre-enrol (current students) no later than April 15, 2021. Use the Find a School tool to find your designated school.

The new school in Westlawn will be named after Alex Janvier. Janvier was born of Denesuline descent with the Cold Lake First Nations. He is a pioneering artist in Canada and speaks of having a creative instinct from as far back as he can remember. Janvier received formal art training from the Alberta College of Art in Calgary where he graduated with honours in 1960. He is a member of what's commonly referred to as the Indian Group of Seven and paints both the challenges and celebrations that he has encountered in his lifetime.

The Board of Trustees approved this school name, along with the names of two more new schools, at a public board meeting on May 14, 2019. Read his full biography or watch the Alex Janvier video to learn more about his contributions and achievements.
