District students are tops at the International World Chinese Language and Culture Competition

Three district students were awarded first prize in the group category at the 6th annual Chinese Bridge, an international Chinese Language and Culture Competition. The students, Shawna Truong and Drew Parker from McNally School and Ivy Friesen from Ross Sheppard School, were led by teacher, Dr. Xie Mian Mian (also the Cultural Co-ordinator of the Confucius Institute in Edmonton).

The group traveled to Kunming in the province of Yunnan, China to attend the two week competition. They were grouped with three students from Toronto to form the Canadian team. The students worked extremely hard and were later awarded first place in the final competition, and second place for being the most popular team in the world. This is a great achievement for local students and also underscores the effectiveness of Chinese language programming in Edmonton Public Schools, a program that has earned international acclaim.

Congratulations Shawna, Drew and Ivy!
