Knowledge and Employability (K&E)
Program Description
The Knowledge and Employability (K&E) curriculum supports students in Grades 8 through 12 who demonstrate reading, writing, mathematical and/or other levels of achievement two to three grade levels below their age-appropriate grade. Knowledge and Employability courses provide students with opportunities to experience success and become well prepared for employment, further studies, citizenship and lifelong learning. All Division schools offering Grades 8 to 12 (with the exception of Old Scona School) can provide K&E programming.

PROGRAM DELIVERY
- Learning activities and experiences that require reading, writing, mathematical literacy and employability skills for the workplace
- Practical lessons that apply to the home, community and workplace
- On- and off-campus experiences and/or community partnerships
- The option to combine K&E courses with other junior high and high school courses or transition in and out of K&E courses throughout Grades 8 to 12
- An opportunity to earn a Certificate of High School Achievement by completing 80 credits in a combination of K&E courses and other courses
- An opportunity to transition from K&E courses to other high school courses to achieve an Alberta High School Diploma
ELIGIBILITY
Students cannot participate in K&E programming based solely on having:
- a diagnosis of special needs
- behavioural challenges which can be addressed through the elective components of regular courses or through remedial classes
- excessively disruptive behaviour
- academic delays resulting from attendance issues or from learning English as a Second Language
K&E courses are designed to provide programming for students who:
- are at least 12 years six months of age on September 1
- experience difficulty with abstract learning
- are presently working two to three grade levels below their age-appropriate grade
Students under the age of 16 are required to have informed written consent from their parents/guardians prior to participating in a K&E course.
ALBERTA CURRICULUM
All Edmonton Public Schools programming is based on curriculum determined by Alberta Education. Students enrolled in K&E will receive the same high-quality education offered in all of our programs.
TRANSPORTATION
Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) is the preferred method of transportation. For more information about busing, contact a school offering K&E.
