Mobile device standards

The Alberta government announced limitations on the use of personal mobile devices and social media on school networks, starting in 2024–25. Personal mobile devices include:

• smartphones
• cellphones
• smart watches
• tablets
• laptops

Students are required to have devices powered off and stored out of sight during class time. They cannot access social media platforms on school networks and devices.

Each school will determine how best to implement the standards based on their school community and existing policies, and will share this information with families.
