Board approves use of capital reserve funds to address rapidly growing student populations

Yesterday, the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to use a portion of the District’s Capital Reserve funds to address the rapid growth in student enrolment at three district schools.
The Board authorized the Administration to spend up to $3.2 million from the Capital Reserve to purchase six new modular classrooms and to relocate eight portable classrooms. The additional classrooms will be placed as follows:
- A. Blair McPherson School will receive six relocated portable classrooms.
- Dr. Donald Massey School will receive two relocated portable classrooms, along with four new modular classrooms.
- Michael Strembitsky School will receive two new modular classrooms.
“The Board decided that approving the use of these funds was the right thing to do, as we had a responsibility to address the capacity challenges at these schools,” says Board Chair Sarah Hoffman. “The use of Capital Reserve funds to address capacity issues is not sustainable, so we would like to work with the Province to come up with a plan to address our short and long term capital needs.”
