Edmonton Public Schools Board Chair Julie Kusiek announced today the retirement of Superintendent Darrel Robertson after an extraordinary career spanning 30 years with the Division, including the last 12 years serving as Superintendent of Schools.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express our deepest gratitude for his dedicated service and unwavering commitment to our students,” said Kusiek.
During his 12 years at the helm, Superintendent Robertson transformed Edmonton Public Schools with a clear and consistent student-focused lens. He has been instrumental in fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, equity, integrity and innovation, always prioritizing the needs and well-being of students.
“Serving Edmonton Public Schools as Superintendent has been an immense pleasure and an honour. This decision, one I’ve been considering carefully for several months, comes with a mix of reflection and anticipation for the future. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside such dedicated educators, staff, and families, all committed to the success of students,” said Robertson.
His exceptional leadership has been recognized both provincially and nationally. He is a recipient of the prestigious Canadian Association of School System Administrators Superintendent of the Year Award and the College of Alberta School Superintendents EXL Award for excellence in school leadership, a testament to his outstanding contributions to education. He was also honoured with the Alumni Honour Award from the University of Alberta, further highlighting his distinguished career and impact on the educational landscape.
“We are immensely grateful for Superintendent Robertson’s decades of service to the students and staff of Edmonton Public Schools,” said Kusiek. “He has left an indelible mark on thousands of students, shaping their lives and inspiring them to achieve their dreams. His passion for public education and his unwavering dedication to students will be deeply missed.”
The Board of Trustees will be embarking on a national search for a new superintendent to lead Edmonton Public Schools. The Board is committed to finding a leader who will build upon Superintendent Robertson’s legacy and continue to champion the success of all students.
