News item: Welcome to the 2025-26 school year

We’re excited to kick off another great school year! Whether you’re new to the Division or looking to brush up on important back-to-school information, you’re in the right place.

Potential teacher job action

We understand there are many questions and uncertainty about the potential for labour action.

Current situation

Members of the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) took a strike vote in the spring and have voted 95 per cent in favour of a strike. The union may serve a notice of strike action at any time within a 120-day period.

Before a strike can happen, the ATA must provide a minimum of 72 hours’ (three days) notice.

How the bargaining process works

In Alberta, bargaining is handled provincially through the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), which is a corporation created by the Public Education Collective Bargaining Act. TEBA represents school boards in collective bargaining for all of Alberta’s public, separate, and Francophone teachers.

The teacher bargaining process involves three stages:

  1. Stage 1: TEBA bargains with the ATA to determine which matters will be negotiated at the provincial level and which at the local (individual school division) level.
  2. Stage 2: TEBA bargains with the ATA on provincial matters affecting all teachers and employers.
    1. Items like salary and general working conditions are negotiated at the provincial level.
  3. Stage 3: Individual school boards then bargain with their local ATA representatives on matters that pertain to individual school boards.

Right now, bargaining is in Stage 2 of the process.

We will update you as information becomes available.

Staying home when sick

One of the most effective ways to keep one another healthy and safe is to stay home when sick. Families, students and staff are asked to monitor for symptoms of illness before coming to school and work. If your child is going to be away from school due to illness, it is important you let the school know.

Help keep our schools safe

The first days back to school are full of excitement, and students may not always be watching the road. As classes resume, we’re reminding all motorists to drive with extra caution.

Drivers are required to slow to 30 km/h in all playground zones from 7:30 a.m.–9 p.m. every day. Let’s work together to keep everyone safe.
