Kindergarten Registration

If your child is new to Edmonton Public Schools, you'll need to register online. Schools start accepting new student registrations for the next school year on February 1, 2024. Applying after March 22, 2024 may limit your options to schools with available space. Learn more about registration dates and deadlines.

Kindergarten Age

Your child can enter Kindergarten as long as they’re not six years old on September 1 of that school year.

Use our calculator to find the earliest year your child can start Kindergarten:

Select your child's year of birth:

Children who are five years old on or before December 31, 2024 may register for Kindergarten for the 2024–25 school year. You do not have to register your child the first year they’re eligible for Kindergarten.

Moving to Edmonton?

If your family is not yet living in the Edmonton area, or if you have recently arrived, please read the important information for families new to Edmonton.

CHOOSING A SCHOOL

DESIGNATED SCHOOL

Resident students can attend their designated school if they make their selection no later than 4 p.m. on March 19, 2025.

In most cases, a resident student of Edmonton Public Schools has at least one parent or legal guardian living in Edmonton who is not Roman Catholic.

Find your designated school

Use the Find a School tool to find your designated school. If your designated school is at Level 3 of the Growth Control Model, it has reached capacity in some grades and a lottery process may be used. This means you may not be able to attend that school.

If you move into the attendance area of a Level 3 school after 4 p.m. on March 19, 2025, and the school is full in the grade your child is entering, your child can go to the overflow designated school or another school with space.

You can ask to be added to your Level 3 designated school’s callback list; if spaces in planned classes at the school open up, they will be offered to students on the list.

OTHER SCHOOLS

A student may also attend any other school in the Division, as long as:

  • the school has available space
  • the student meets any entrance criteria of that school

If the number of students who want to attend a school or program exceeds the available space, applicants from outside the school’s designated attendance area will be chosen by random selection.

NON-RESIDENT STUDENTS CHANGING SCHOOLS

Non-resident students who are changing schools, including students who are entering junior high or high school, are welcome to attend any Division school with space. Enrolment will depend on:

  • which level the school is at on the Growth Control Model, and
  • if there is space at the school after all resident students are enrolled

The Education Act requires us to enrol resident students first.

Online Learning

Families of Grade 1–12 students who would like their child to learn online can register or pre-enrol at Argyll Centre. Students will be accepted as long as there is room in the desired class or program. Kindergarten is only available in person. Learn more about online learning in Edmonton Public Schools.

When should I register?

Whether you register early or right before 4 p.m. on March 19, your child’s chance of attending a school or program remains the same. Schools review all registrations after March 19, and registrations are not first-come, first-served.

Registering after the deadline

You can still register your child after the deadline, or for immediate entry—we accept new registrations all year long. Contact your designated school if you have questions about late registration.

HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE

STEP 1: GET ORGANIZED

You will need to provide documents confirming:

  • the address for the student’s parent or guardian
  • legal proof of the student’s name, citizenship status and birthdate

EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTED DOCUMENTATION

If you’re not sure which documents to provide, contact your preferred school.

LEGAL PROOF OF YOUR CHILD'S NAME AND AGE

CONFIRMATION OF ADDRESS

  • Canadian provincial birth certificate
  • Canadian citizenship document
  • passport
  • student study permit
  • confirmation of a permanent residence document

If the documents don’t confirm your child’s citizenship or status, parents may be asked to provide citizenship immigration documents (e.g., work permit, study permit or citizenship card or certificate). Visit
Citizenship and Immigration Canada for more information.

  • driver's licence
  • utility bill
  • property tax bill
  • banking, financial or insurance documents

In some cases, you may be asked to provide more than one of the above.

STEP 2: PREPARE YOUR DOCUMENTS

Before you register, it’s important to have your documents ready. You will need to upload the documents to complete and submit your registration.

If you are using a computer, have a scanned image of each document saved on your computer.

If you are using a mobile device, you can take photos of your required documents as you fill out the form.

STEP 3: REVIEW AND COMPLETE THE DIGITAL STUDENT REGISTRATION FORM

You can only register at one school. To submit your digital student registration form online, you will need to:

  • upload your documents
  • provide an electronic signature
  • enter your email address (this helps us confirm your identity and allows us to send you a copy of the completed form)

There is no option to save your progress. Once you start, we recommend finishing the form.

Step 4: Check your email

After submitting the form:

  • check your email for a message from Adobe Sign
  • click the "confirm my email address" link in the Adobe Sign email to complete the registration

You will get a PDF copy of your digital registration form once it has been processed.

If you do not receive the Adobe Sign email within three hours, check your spam folder and make sure you are checking the email account you used on the registration form.

AFTER YOU REGISTER

Once you submit a completed and signed digital student registration form:

  • the form and supporting documents are sent securely to the school to review
  • you will get an email confirming the form has been submitted
  • the school will contact you if they need more information (this does not mean your child has been enrolled at the school)
  • the school will confirm if your child is enrolled

Note: Most schools are closed in July and August. If you register over the summer, you may not get confirmation of enrolment until school staff return in late August. You do not need to reapply.

If you have questions about the form or need to make a change please contact the school.

OTHER WAYS TO REGISTER

If you are unable to register online, use the print version of the student registration form. You can mail or drop off your completed registration form and supporting documents to the school.
