Full-day Kindergarten

Program Description

Full-day Kindergarten programming supports children living in socially vulnerable neighbourhoods who would benefit from extra time in class to build important skills in an inclusive, play-based environment. 

Goals

  • Develop early language, literacy, numeracy and motor skills
  • Learn to share, co-operate, be responsible, problem-solve, self-express and make decisions
  • Participate in group and individual classroom activities
  • Develop positive attitudes toward learning
  • Develop a sense of confidence and self-esteem

Program delivery

  • Full-day program at some schools
  • Organized activities within a play-based learning environment
  • Flexible instruction based on childrens’ needs and interests
  • Supports like speech and language services, physical therapy, occupational therapy and school family liaison services

Eligibility

Children must be five years old on or before December 31 and live within the school’s attendance area to be eligible for Full-Day Kindergarten.

Schools may have limited spaces available to children outside their attendance area. Parents are advised to follow the Kindergarten registration process and apply to the school they are interested in their child attending. Once registration applications are in, any spaces available may be filled using random selection.

Alberta curriculum

All Edmonton Public Schools programming is based on curriculum determined by Alberta Education. Children enrolled in Full-day Kindergarten will receive the same high-quality education offered in all of our programs.
