News item: New government funding to fast-track new school construction

Edmonton Public Schools is ready to move ahead on a number of projects to build and modernize schools thanks to new spending announced by the Government of Alberta.

About the funding

Across the province, the $8.6 billion School Construction Accelerator Program will kick-start up to 30 new school projects and eight modernization and replacement projects every year over the next three years.

Modular classrooms will add an additional 20,000 new student spaces across the province over the next four years.

What this means for Edmonton Public Schools

“With this announcement, I can foresee a day where makerspaces are full classrooms, rather than a corner of the library; a foods class that doesn’t also hold a math class; and staff rooms that give our hardworking staff a place to take a break,” Edmonton Public School Board Chair Julie Kusiek said.

“I can see that with accelerated construction and committed funding, Edmonton Public Schools will be able to grow and expand our 30-plus alternative programs, offering more choice to students and their families.”

She added that Edmonton Public Schools is on track to move forward on all of the 12 priority projects listed in year one of the Edmonton Public Schools 2025–28 Capital Plan, in time for Budget 2025.
