Earlier this week, the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) approved two policy positions brought forward by the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees.
The Board’s policy position recommendations were for the ASBA to advocate for the Government of Alberta to take the following steps:
“The Board of Trustees strongly advocated for the ASBA to adopt the policy positions on kindergarten programming and financial literacy,” says Board Chair Sarah Hoffman. “We believe these steps are vital if students are to get the best possible start in their education and develop the skills they need to successfully manage their finances.”
While the Board was disappointed that the ASBA did not adopt its policy position recommendation on protection for sexual orientation and gender minority students, staff and families, the Board is proud that this important discussion is now reaching the provincial level.
“Our Board has taken a leadership position on these important issues,” says Hoffman. “As Trustees, we are committed to making all schools the most effective and welcoming places we possibly can, for each and every student.”
See the November 13, 2012 board report for more details on the policy positions.
