New model replaces School Resource Officer program in Edmonton Public Schools

News item: Youth Enhanced Deployment model

The Board of Trustees has endorsed a new model that will replace the School Resource Officer (SRO) program in Edmonton Public Schools for the 2020-2021 school year.

Through the new Youth Enhanced Deployment (YED) model, officers will not be based in Edmonton Public Schools. Instead, the model will have officers who are trained to respond with youth assigned over two geographic areas - north and south - who, subject to availability, will respond to school calls and also have community policing duties.

The independent evaluation and research of the SRO program, which was approved by the Board of Trustees in June, will continue as the Division transitions to this new model for the 2020-2021 school year.
