The discovery of 169 unmarked graves at the Grouard Indian Residential School in northern Alberta hits especially close to home for many members of our communities. We recognize the pain this discovery has caused and extend our sympathies to the Kapawe'no First Nation and to all who are grieving.
The deeply harmful legacy of residential schools continues to leave lasting injury for many people in our city, schools and communities. Schools are places where children are to be loved, cared for and supported. We acknowledge and honour the residential school survivors and those who tragically never made it home. The Division is committed to listening, learning and continuing the important work on the actions recommended by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
