News Item: Join our new Equity Advisory Committee

If you’re a parent or community member who has an interest in helping to eliminate systemic racism, apply to be part of our new Equity Advisory Committee. We’re filling eight positions on this 17-person committee and accepting applications until 10 a.m. on November 12, 2020

At Edmonton Public Schools, we strive to create learning and working environments that respect diversity and foster a sense of belonging. Let’s work together to help provide a welcoming, caring, safe and respectful school experience for all students and staff.

WHAT'S INVOLVED?

Edmonton Public Schools is committed to supporting equity in schools and workplaces, and our new Equity Advisory Committee will help with this important work. The committee’s first focus will be on how the Division can set up a model to collect race-based data and to provide recommendations to the Superintendent around important next steps in this work.

The committee, which does not have decision-making authority, will provide initial advice and recommendations to the Superintendent by the spring of 2021. Committee members will look at questions such as:

  • What does the Division need to consider when developing a model to gather race-based data?
  • What’s the purpose for collecting the data?
  • How will the Division use this data?
  • What details should be collected?

To support the first phase of this work, committee members will need to be available to attend three virtual meetings, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on:

  • Tuesday, December 1, 2020
  • Tuesday, January 19, 2021
  • Tuesday, March 2, 2021

WHO CAN JOIN?

Our Equity Advisory Committee is made up of 17 members, including Division and student representatives.

Eight candidates will be chosen to fill the community positions on the committee:

  • parents of school-aged children, and
  • other interested community members.

All applicants need to provide two character references.

APPLY

Complete this application form before 10 a.m. on November 12, 2020. We cannot accept any applications after this deadline. Successful candidates will be notified on November 25, 2020.

Applicants who are not selected to be part of this committee will still have a chance to join in important conversations about anti-racism. Our Division will seek meaningful feedback from the community in many ways, as part of ongoing work to advance equity across our organization.
