News item: Playground Planning Guide

Edmonton Public Schools created the Playground Planning Guide to provide detailed information about the resources available to parents and volunteers interested in building or upgrading a playground in their community.

The guide outlines the planning, funding, tendering and construction process for new and existing playgrounds. It also includes a step-by-step checklist to lead playground committees through each stage of the project with ease.

What’s in the guide

  • Information on how to form a playground committee.
  • How to engage your school’s principal and connect with Division supports.
  • A list of provincial and federal grants available for playground and community projects.
  • Detailed instructions about planning, budgeting, funding and construction.
  • Common definitions for vocabulary and terminology that playground committees may encounter.

Getting started

Playground development projects take a considerable amount of time. Community members and parent groups looking to build or refurbish an existing playground will need to recruit volunteers to form a committee to plan, budget, and fundraise.

Once the playground committee is formed, the volunteers will engage with their school principal, who will manage relationships between the committee and Division supports.

If you are interested in taking on a playground project, the Playground Planning Guide has everything you need to get started.
