Welcome back for the 2016-17 school year. I hope your family had a fantastic summer despite the almost daily thundershowers.
Your children will be settling into their classrooms and into the routine of school life today. As parents, my wife and I have always had mixed feelings about this time of year. On the one hand, it’s so rewarding to see your child progressing in their learning. On the other hand, it’s hard to see them growing up...so fast. One day you’re carrying their diaper bag, the next day they’re begging you drop them off a block from the school so their friends don’t see you!
Whatever feelings you have about the beginning of school, I wanted to let you know that everything we do at Edmonton Public Schools is done with students’ learning and well-being at the forefront. We believe that every child deserves outstanding teachers and high-quality learning spaces. When you drop your children off at school today, know that our school staff are going to commit all of their skill, time and resources to your child’s success. Our central administration staff are also working in the wings to make sure schools have the support they need to deliver on that commitment.
I believe that educating children is a team sport. We can’t do this work without you. So, thank you for the million things you do – seen and unseen – every day to support your child’s learning and growth.
I hope everyone has an outstanding year.
