News item: Seeking volunteers to join the Equity Advisory Committee

We believe that listening to and learning from students, staff, families and community is critical to understanding what is important as we take proactive steps to address the racism and inequities that still exist in our school Division, workplaces and broader community.

Edmonton Public Schools is seeking volunteers to join the Equity Advisory Committee for a two-year term starting in September 2024. We encourage parents, guardians, community members and former students to express their interest in becoming members of this committee.

We are currently looking to fill up to 20 volunteer positions on this committee. Please review the information below and submit your expression of interest by 4 p.m. on Monday, June 24.

What’s involved?

The committee will provide advice on the Division’s ongoing initiatives under the Anti-racism and Equity Action Plan in order to help move this work forward. The action plan was created in the fall of 2021 and is guided and supported by the following policies and reports:

Committee discussions could focus on exploring actions the Division might take to mitigate harms from inequities through various practices and initiatives, learning from members' experiences, and addressing broader societal complexities within the context of the public school system.

Membership and selection

We are currently looking to fill up to 20 volunteer positions on this committee. Division staff members will chair, facilitate and support the work. The meetings are also attended by senior leadership and representatives from the Board of Trustees.

The Division uses an anonymous process to review submissions and build a committee membership that reflects diverse perspectives from across school communities. Candidates who identify as part of an equity-deserving group or have relevant lived experience will receive additional consideration.

An equity-deserving group includes communities that have historically experienced significant systemic barriers on the basis of their identity. This could include barriers based on ethnicity, disability, gender, nationality, race, sexual orientation, etc.

Time commitment

Members are asked to commit to a two-year term starting in September 2024 and can expect to attend 3-4 meetings per year.

How to apply

Please complete your expression of interest and submit by 4 p.m. on Monday, June 24. Late submissions will not be considered.
