The former chair of the Edmonton Public School Board has officially resigned her position. Sarah Hoffman was recently elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the provincial election. Her colleagues accepted her resignation at the regularly scheduled board meeting on May 19.
The Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, May 26 at 11 a.m. to decide whether to hold a by-election to replace Hoffman or to divide the responsibilities for her constituents amongst the remaining eight trustees.
The Edmonton Public School Board is nearly halfway through its four-year mandate; the next municipal elections are in late 2017.
During the provincial campaign, Hoffman had taken a leave of absence from her role on the Edmonton Public School Board. Former Vice-Chair Michael Janz has been the Board Chair since Hoffman left.
“We congratulate Sarah on her recent election win,” said Board Chair Janz. “She was an exceptional chair and served students, families and the community very well. She made countless contributions during her time as board chair and worked tirelessly to ensure Edmonton students had access to exceptional education. She was passionate about her role.”
In other board news, the trustees unanimously approved various locally developed courses that will be implemented at District schools. The courses, which include applied graphic arts, ballet, audio, ceramics and dance, provide students high-quality learning that will help the learners of today become the leaders of tomorrow.
