News item: Trustees to ask province to phase out private school funding

Trustees will soon ask the province to phase out public funding of private schools and instead re-invest that money into the public system. This was the first part of a motion that Trustees passed at the April 19, 2016 board meeting.

The second part of the passed motion stated that charter schools should be welcomed into the public system.

“We respect parent choice and are committed to offering alternative programming within the public system,” said Board Chair Michael Janz. “But the choice to access a private education system should not be publicly funded with taxpayers’ dollars.”

The motion passed with the majority of Trustees voting in favour of the idea.

CAREER PATHWAYS

In other Board news, students and staff from a number of District schools gave presentations about programs available through Career Pathways, an initiative that gives students hands-on experience that helps ready them for careers. One of the goals of Career Pathways is to develop a career planning portfolio tool that will allow students to research different career paths and document the skills they are learning throughout school.
