News item: Athlone School students will relocate temporarily

During a recent inspection of Athlone School, Division staff discovered mould in a decommissioned crawl space beneath the school. As a result, all contaminated materials in the crawl space must be removed and replaced.

NO RISK TO STUDENT HEALTH

An immediate and extensive review of the school, which includes air quality testing, by a hazardous materials consultant confirmed the mould is confined to the crawl space and has not spread to other areas of the school. Ongoing air quality testing determined there are no mould spores present in areas of the school accessible to students and staff, and there is no health risk.

REPAIRS TO BE COMPLETE BY SEPTEMBER 1

Because repairs are expected to take 2.5–3 months to complete, the Division has decided to begin removal of contaminated materials before summer break.

Athlone students will be relocated to Kensington School for the remainder of the 2021–22 school year, starting May 30, 2022. This will avoid learning interruptions for students while crews work in the school and help ensure the project is finished before September 1.

The Division is supporting both schools to ensure a successful transition for students, staff and families leading up to the summer break.

Construction at Athlone School will begin June 1, 2022, and the school will be ready to welcome students back in time for the start of the 2022–23 school year.

The Division will provide further updates as work progresses through the summer.
