Starting in the 2022–23 school year, we will offer the Spanish Bilingual program in our schools. Any new Spanish Bilingual sites will work toward obtaining the International Spanish Academy status.
Since the first establishment of International Spanish Academies in Edmonton Public Schools, there has been a change in the requirements by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training about how schools are awarded the International Spanish Academy designation. Schools now have to graduate a cohort of students through a complete Spanish-English bilingual program before a school is eligible for this designation. By changing the name of the program, we can continue to expand Spanish language programming into areas where families want it, while schools work toward getting their international designation in the future.
All of our current International Spanish Academy schools (McKernan, Mill Creek and Sweet Grass) will keep this designation, and the programming itself won’t change—just the name. Students will receive the same high quality Spanish-English education at any Division school offering the Spanish Bilingual program.
