News item: School Renaming Criteria Advisory Committee 2022

The Division’s School Renaming Criteria Advisory Committee is seeking members to share their perspective on criteria for when and how we rename a school. If you’re a parent, staff member or a member of the wider community, we’re seeking your voice as a volunteer on our School Renaming Criteria Advisory Committee from September 2022 to February 2023.

All who are interested are encouraged to apply to the committee.

What’s involved?

The committee will engage in a series of facilitated conversations that will provide feedback to support developing:

  • a school renaming policy for Edmonton Public Schools, including criteria that informs the decision to rename a school or not
  • a plan to support a Division-wide review of all school names
  • a comprehensive approach to the renaming of schools

The work of the committee will not involve renaming schools or recommending or deciding on which specific schools could be renamed.

Review the Board of Trustee’s motion on renaming schools, passed on September 7, 2021, and the Board of Trustees’ policy on anti-racism and equity, to learn more about the direction that will be central to the work of this committee.

Membership and selection

The committee will include the following members, to a maximum of 25 participants:

  • up to five current students (to be recruited in the fall)
  • up to five parents or guardians
  • up to five staff members
  • up to five community members
  • up to five individuals who also are involved in anti-racism work

Two Trustees will also sit on the committee.

Designated Division staff will facilitate and support the discussion and work of members. In addition, two Division staff members will co-chair the committee.

All applications will be reviewed through an anonymous ranking process. Upon review, all applicants will be contacted indicating either their acceptance to the committee or thanking them for their interest.

Time commitment

The work of the committee will occur in the 2022–23 school year, with a final report from the Committee to Division administration being completed by March 1, 2023. Members will be asked to participate in up to four meetings during this time and may be required to do some reading outside of the committee meeting times.

Meetings will be held in early evenings and be two to three hours in length. It is expected that meetings will be held in person, with food and refreshments provided, pending public health guidance at the time. Exact meeting dates will be provided closer to the start of the new school year in September.
